In the summer you regularly have to deal with the bare upper body of men, strolling through summery weather. This is regarded pretty normal: naked skin, sometimes a belly, perhaps some muscles, nearly always two nipples.
The male upper body can often be admired in magazines, on TV and on our social media. Unfortunately, the moment a woman would take off her shirt — because it is hot or for whatever reason she may have — it is immediately regarded as “too sexy” and often even banned on social media. Smart algorithms determine what we can and cannot see when we scroll through our feeds. However, we often forget what has been kept from appearing on those feeds, amongst which censored female nipples. Female nipples are, unlike men’s nipples, not allowed on many large online platforms, such as Instagram or Facebook. The Protest Supplies Store regards censorship of female bodies as an issue. The female nipple is sexualised and the commandment seems to be that it should remain covered, while the male nipple may appear free and happily, both in real-life and online. Many activists have already preceded us in their struggle against this female-unfriendly structure. For example, Lina Esco made the film “Free the Nipple” in 2014 [1] about the female movement that bears the same title that has existed since 2012. Where mainly American women fight for equal treatment when it comes to women's and men's nipples. The United States may be known as a squeamish country, but algorithms on platforms transcend borders, and suppress people around the globe.
In addition to the fact that women cannot stroll around in their bare chests as they please, censorship on women’s bodies has far-reaching consequences for many women’s lives. Not seeing women’s bodies regularly in our public domains means that these bodies are not seen as “normal” — as bare-chested men are seen — but directly as sexual. We believe this construct is one amongst many that contribute to misogyny and violence towards woman. For example, one in five women is confronted with sexual violence [2],which cannot be seen separately from the over-sexualizion of the female body. Another concrete example is from the former psychologist Kaat Bollen. In 2020 she had to deal with the Belgian psychology scrutiny committee because she allegedly posted photos online that were “too sexy”. According to the committee these expressions would harm her male colleagues’ reputations. Now Kaat Bollen is not allowed to practice as a psychologist anymore, because even in the appeal it was still plead that these photos would compromise the dignity of her (male) peers [3]. We cannot imagine this happening to a man.
Showing female nipples online wouldn’t solve all the violence and prejudice women face, sometimes even on a daily basis, but showing various women’s nipples would render the female body a lot more “normal”, in other words, it would help desexualising and normalise the presence of female bodies in our shared spaces, be it offline or online. You could find out that most female breasts are not the round, showy shapes you often see in pornography, but they can be big, small, round, pointed, and uneven. The female body, as any body, comes in all sizes, forms and shapes imaginable. The instagram account @genderless_nipple [4] has already proven that you can hardly determine gender based on just the nipple itself, so what's the censorship really about? Madeleijn van den Nieuwehuizen rightfully wonders in extent of this question: what is the women's nipple, except a politicized piece of human skin? [5] Let alone, the breast is a secondary sexual property, just like beards and hips.
Anyway, as long as the decision on what is ethically justified to post social media and what is not, photos with women’s nipples are unfortunately regarded as 'not done'. Hence, we can only offer a temporary alternative. The alternative are nipple stickers printed with men’s nipples. You can paste these stickers over your nipples so that topless photos are allowed by the social media community guidelines: and yes, it works! In working towards a more permanent solution towards this issue we believe it is important to recognise that it is not a problem where only women should participate in the solution, but where men in particular should take a more proactive role in working towards a better treatment of men, women and others on the spectrum of gender. Thus, some borrowed us their nipples.

In de zomer krijg je regelmatig te maken met het ontblote bovenlichaam van de man. Dit is dan ook vrij normaal, huid, soms een buikje, soms wat spieren, bijna altijd twee tepels. Dit bovenlichaam is vaak te bewonderen, in magazines, op tv en op onze sociale media. Helaas is het zo, dat op het moment dat een vrouw haar shirt uit zou trekken, omdat het warm is of omdat het kan, het gelijk “te sexy” is en op de sociale media vaak zelfs verboden. Slimme algoritmes bepalen wat we wel en niet te zien krijgen als wij scrollen door onze feed. Vrouwentepels zijn dan ook, in tegenstelling tot mannentepels, niet toegestaan op veel grootte online platformen, zoals Instagram en Facebook. . Deze censuur op vrouwenlichamen ziet de Protest Supplies Store als een probleem. De vrouwen tepel wordt gezien als een seksueel object wat bedekt moet blijven, terwijl de mannen tepel gewoon vrij en blij mag verschijnen, zowel in real-life als online.
Veel activisten gingen ons al voor. Zo maakte Lina Esco in 2014 de film “free the nipple”[1] naar de gelijknamige vrouwen beweging die al bestaat sinds 2012. Waar voornamelijk Amerikaanse vrouwen strijden voor een gelijkwaardige behandeling als het gaat om vrouwen- en mannentepels. De Verenigde Staten staat wellicht bekend als een land wat preuts is, maar algoritmes op platforms zijn grens overstijgend.
Behalve dat vrouwen niet onbezorgd rond kunnen lopen in hun blote bast heeft censuur op vrouwenlichamen ver gaande gevolgen voor veel vrouwenlevens. Het niet zien van vrouwenlichamen zorgt ervoor dat deze lichamen niet als “normaal” worden gezien, maar direct als seks. Zo is het dat één op de vijf vrouwen te maken krijgt met seksueel geweld[2], wat niet los kan staan van het over geseksualiseerde vrouwenlichaam. Een ander concreet voorbeeld is van de voormalig psycholoog Kaat Bollen. Die vorig jaar te maken kreeg met de Belgische psychologencommissie vanwege “te sexy” foto’s, wat volgens de commissie haar mannelijke collega’s zou schaden. Nu is Kaat Bollen psycholoog af, want zelfs in het hoger beroep werd er nog steeds gezegd dat deze foto’s ervoor zouden zorgen dat de waardigheid van de psycholoog in het geding zou raken[3]. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat dit overkomt bij een man.
Het laten zien van vrouwentepels online zou niet de oplossing zijn voor al het geweld en vooroordelen waar vrouwen mee te maken krijgen, maar het laten zien van diverse vrouwentepels zou het vrouwenlichaam een stuk “normaler” maken. Je zou kunnen zien dat ze niet enkel de ronde pronke vormen hebben die je vaak ziet in porno, maar dat ze groot, klein, rond, puntig en ongelijk kunnen zijn. Het instagram account @genderless_nipple[4] heeft al bewezen dat je aan de tepel zelf nauwelijks gender af kan lezen, dus waar gaat het eigenlijk om? Madeleijn van den Nieuwehuizen vraagt zich oprecht af; wat is de vrouwen tepel, behalve een gepolitiseerd stukje mensenhuid?[5]
Maar goed, zolang algoritmes beslissen wat wel en niet ethisch verantwoord is om op sociale media te plaatsen en foto’s met vrouwentepels per definitie not done zijn, kunnen we enkel een tijdelijk alternatief bieden. Het alternatief, stickers van mannentepels. Deze stickers kan je plakken over je vrouwentepels zodat topless foto’s wel toegestaan worden. Volgens ons is het geen probleem waar alleen vrouwen zouden moeten meewerken aan de oplossing, maar dat vooral mannen een actieve rol moeten innemen als het gaat om een ongelijke behandeling tussen mannen, vrouwen en andere vormen op het spectrum van gender.
